SEPTEMBER NEWS

Year 5 have made a great start to the year. It has been lovely to hear about what the children did over the Summer!
In writing, the children have been learning our first text of the year ‘Perseus and the Gorgon’, by exploring the vocabulary used. In reading, we have started to read ‘Into the Forest’ by Anthony Browne. The children have really enjoyed finding clues day-by-day to try and predict what plot twists the story may have! In maths, we have started to learn about numbers up to 1,000,000 by exploring place value. Please keep practising times tables and division facts up to 12x12 at home to help support your child’s speed and fluency with these. We have also started our first enquiry of the year which is ‘How Can Science Help the Vulnerable’.
Thanks everyone for a great start to Year 5!

OCTOBER NEWS

We have been continuing the hard work in Year 5. We have recently started reading Malamander , which has grasped everyone’s attention as we build on our reading skills to make predictions, infer the story and explain our ideas.
The children have written brilliant ‘Defeat the Monster’ stories which some excellent description of both their heroes and monsters, using relative clauses a variety of adjectives and similes.
During our Enquiry lessons, we have been exploring materials and discussing reversible and irreversible changes. The children made alien soup and then separated materials, we are currently using evaporation to
separate the water and salt… we might be waiting a while!
Thank you for your continued support reading with your child at home and embedding times tables facts.

NOVEMBER NEWS

Year 5 have made a great start to Term 2, it has also been lovely to hear about activities the children did over half term, Halloween and Bonfire Night! We have been continuing to read Malmander, the plot has us all hooked and each chapter ends on a cliffhanger! In writing, we have started to look at newspaper reports and we are using ‘Beastly Breakout’ as a model text. In Enquiry, we have started our new question ‘What does Earth look like from Space?’. We were extremely fortunate to have a planetarium in school on Monday and we got to experience Space from a 360 perspective and learn lots about Space in the past, present and future! We have been continuing to practise out Young Voices songs and excitement is building ahead of that event!

Thanks for all of your help and support with home learning.
